Jules Hauel was a Philadelphia Perfumer from the mid 1840s until around 1865. He started out as a "Fancy Goods Dealer" in 1840, and at that time he was importing Perfumeries from Europe. Like most other respectable Importers of Perfumery, he carried the line of Guerlain from Paris. This included "Guerlain's Eau Lustral" for the hair, which Hauel later imitated.
The primary address of Hauel's business was on Chestnut Street. By 1854, he had another address at 73 Maiden Lane. In 1862, they opened a store at 930 Archer. In 1865 (their last listing), they were only listed at the Archer address. In 1863, Hauel was partners with F.B. Strouss and the business was called "Perfumers & Fancy Soaps Mfrs."
One of the products Hauel & Co. was famous for was his shaving creams. The pot lids from these products were very elaborate and beautiful. They are now highly collectible and valuable.
