This was originally sold by several Perfumers. The first known Proprietor was Dr. Fontaine. His preparation was originally made and sold by Hotchkiss & Co., of Boston. It was later being sold by Fetridge and Co. The earlier flyers (See example) indicated that it was also used for a hair preparation. Some of the later advertisements under Fetridge did not make hair claims. In 1857, Fetridge filed a lawsuit against Marvin Merchant for selling a preparation called Balm Of X Thousand Flowers. The following poem was in the 1857 Bostoniad:
Like odours sweet from Tempe's vale, or fair Arcadian Bowers, Are fragrant perfumes we inhale from Balm of Thousand Flowers. The Atlantides for knowledge high and beauty far renowned, Beneath their Myrtle groves reclined, with Thousand Flowers around, In bright Hesparius' magic dells, 'neath Amaranthine spray, Waved the Thousand Flowers that blush'd on Juno's nuptial day. Yes! like the Thousand Flowers that breath'd perfumes on Classic lands-- Mirror'd where Pactolous healing Flood rolled over golden sands. ... While Fetridges's & Fontain's Fame O'r time siblimely towers, Thro' countless Agency's you'll find the Balm of Thousand Flowers.
