Harrison's Columbian Hair Dye
This was one of the products of Appollos W. Harrison. Picture for the #2 was provided by Jeff Scharnowske. In 1893, the Era Formulary listed the following formulas for Harrison's Hair Dyes:
No. 1, To 1 ounce of pyro-gallic acid, add 1 ounce of tannin dissolved in 2 ounces of alcohol, add 1 quart of soft water. No. 2, To 1 ounce of crystalized nitrate of silver, dissolved in 1 ounce of concentrated aqua-ammonia, add 5 ounces of soft water and 1 ounce of gum arabic. No. 3, One ounce hydro-sulfate of potassa, dissolved in 1 quart of soft water; this last ingredient is intended to produce a deep black color if the others should fail - keep away from the light.
