Amos I. Mathews was first listed in Buffalo, New York City Directories in 1847 as a "Druggist" at 221 Main Street. By 1870, he had moved to 12 Gold, and was listed as "Medicines." He continued to be listed as either "Drugs," "Medicines," or "Patent Medicines" until his final listing in 1887. Other addresses held include: 85 Murray, from 74 to 79, and 81 Barclay, from 1880 to 1887. In advertisements he claimed to have started making the Dye in 1845. The earliest reference I've found to his hair preparations is a pamphlet he put out in 1856 (enter). In it he listed six proprietary hair preparations: "Matthews' Depilatory Powder," "Tricopherous," "Castorine," "Bear's Pomatum," "Nutrient Hair Oil," and "Venetian Liquid Hair Dye." The Venetian Hair Dye was still listed for sale in the 1885 McKesson & Robbins catalog. Matthews advertised another product, called "Arnic Hair Gloss" from 1862 (New York Independent) until 1875 (John F. Henry catalog).
