Ward's (E.A.) Vegetable Oil
Ethan Allen Ward was first listed in New York in as an "M.D." and "Druggist." His primary business was at 241 Spring from 1834 until around 1841, when he moved his business to 113 Chambers. In the 41-2 Directory, he was listed as a "Professor of Diseases of Women & Children," then the following year (last year listed) he was just listed as a "Physician." E.A. Ward's Hair Oil was still being sold in 1844 and 1845, but the Proprietor at that time is unknown.

Since one of the variants has Lowell as the location, I looked there for him as well. I found an Ethan Allen in Monson, Mass. in 1820. Someone also had a Ethan that live in Lowell and died in 1838. I've found advertisements for this product from 1833 until 1845.

This is an extremely rare and desirable hair prep. bottle. I'm looking at one for sale on eBay right now (6/02) for $450. Picture of the #2 was courtesy of Gary Koltookian.
