William T. Wallace, of Troy, Texas, registered a Patent for his Hair Tonic in 1888 (Patent #386,617). He said it would prevent the hair from falling out, and cause a new growth of hair where the follicles are not dead. The preparation was composed of 4 ounces of olive oil, 1 1/2 ounces of tincture of cantharides, 1 1/2 ounces of cocoa oil, 1 ounce of caster oil, 1 ounce of alcohol, 1/2 ounce of solution of ammonia, 1/2 ounce of bay rum, 2 drams of borax, 1/2 dram of oil of bergamot, and enough cologne to perfume.
