Robert A. Chesebrough, of New York City registered a patent in 1872 for "IMPROVEMENT IN PRODUCTS FROM PETROLEUM" (Patent #127,568). This was the original Vaseline. In the letters of patent he talked about its many uses including: treating leather, lubricating machinery, hair pomade, and hand lotion.
Vaseline Hair Tonic was sold by the Cheseborough Mfg. Co., of New York City. I found it advertised in 1905 in the Atlanta Constitution and in 1920 in the Illustrated London News.
