Davis Tope, of Geneva, Nebraska, registered a Patent for his Hair Tonic in 1886 (Patent #352,938). He said the preparation was invented to "restore, promote, and strengthen the growth of hair." It was composed of 2 ounces of spirits of cologn, 1/2 dram of spirits of ammonia, 2 1/2 drams of tincture of cantharides (spanish fly), 20 drops of oil of rosemary, 20 drops of oil of nutmeg, and 20 drops of oil of lavender.
