Dr J.W. Thomas, of New Orleans, registered a label for his "Fast Hair Grower" in 1874, and another one for "Specific Preparations for the Hair" in 1875 (view). They were probably different stages of the same product. The following text was transcribed from the label:
THOMAS'S SPECIFIC PREPARATIONS FOR THE HAIR.>
A certain and speedy cure for baldness when the bulb is not destroyed." This preparation is purely vegetable, and contains nothing injurious to the health or hair. It is an unfailing restorative, when the bulb of the hair is not destroyed. It removes dandruff immediately. It is also one of the best dressings for the toilet in the world, cleansing the scalp from all impurities, giving it a healthy tone, and making the hair soft, beautiful and glossy. A few applications will effectively STOP THE HAIR FROM FALLING OUT. From one to three bottles this size will cure most cases of baldness, giving a fine healthy growth of hair. It will not color hair already grown, but will restore gray hair by growing it out anew to its original color, when it becomes prematurely gray.
