Charles Rothe was born in Germany in about 1819. After coming to America, he was listed as a "Hairdresser/Wigmaker" in Boston from 1850 till 1878. His primary business address was on Washington Street, starting at #294 1/2, and ending up at #493. He was selling the dye at least as early as 1850. That year he brought a bunch of it to a fair for Farmers and Mechanics. In 1870, Adolphus Rothe (probably his son), joined him in the business. From 1879 until past the turn of the century, Adolphus ran the business himself. In fact, Charles was listed as a retired Wigmaker in 1880. Adolphus was partners with Charles A. Garey from 1879 to 1880. The "J.W. Norcross & Co." mentioned in the ad below were probably just the agents for the preparation in New York.
