Mme Bertha Requardt was a Hairdresser in Baltimore from 1882 until 1889. The Bertha Co. was started in 1890 at approximately the same address which Mme Requardt had held the year before. In 1891, Mme Requardt registered the words "Tar Tonic," and "Madame Requardt's Tar Tonic for the Hair," as trademarks for a "Hair Tonic." The label shown was given as an example of how the trademarks were used. The trunk of the tree is crossed twice to symbolize a monogram: T T (Tar Tonic). Mme Requardt claimed to have been using the brand name since 1870. She also mentioned that the brand name was sometimes blown into the bottle. The Bertha Co. continued in business in Baltimore until at least 1912. Their primary business address was on Park Avenue. They were listed under Hairdressers, and Human Hair Merchants. The bottle below was offered in a Harmer Rooke Galleries' Auction.
