Peter W. Ziegler and Milton W. Case of Philadelphia registered the word "Quillaline" as a trademark for a "Hair Tonic, Restorative, and Dressing," in 1879. They included the label shown here with the trademark petition as an example of how they would use the trademark. I wonder if this Ziegler was related to the Ziegler who sold Dr Leons' Electric Hair Renewer. The label said the product was made by the Home Medicine Company, of Philadelphia. The following is a transcription of some of the smaller text on the label:
QUILLALINE HAIR TONIC
The only perfect restorative and a most elegant dressing for the hair. Made from highly refined and elegantly perfumed coal oil, combined with the bark of the quillaya seponaria, as an evergreen tree growing in the mountains of Chile, and used by the natives with wonderful success. It removes dandruff, cleanses the head, restores gray hair to its natural color, causes hair to grow on bald heads, and softens, preserves and beautifies the hair.
Prepared at the Laboratory of the Home Medicine Company, Philadelphia, Pa. For sale by all Dealers, Druggists, General Stores & Agents. Price 75 cents. Agents wanted. DIRECTIONS
For restoring and preserving the hair use freely and often. Rub well into the roots of the hair. Occasionally wash the head with cold water and afterward apply the Quillaline. As a hair dressing use as desired. It will be found superior to all others.
