Putnam's Medicated Hair Tonic
Caroline Remond Putnam was a prominent black woman of Salem Massachussetts. She and her husband Joseph H. Putnam had a Hairdressing establishment there in the 1850s. In 1850, Joseph was listed as a Hairdresser at 175 1/2 Essex in Salem Mass. His wife Caroline was listed at the same address as Hair Work Manufacturer starting in 1851. From 1861 until at least 1882, Caroline R. was listed at various Essex addresses - also as a Hair Work Manufacturer. According to some sources, Caroline had been running the wig factory prior to marrying Joseph. It was also said that she was the Proprietor of the Medicated hair Tonic. Another source called it Mrs. Putnam's Medicated Hair Tonic.
