Samuel Monks was a Hairdresser/Wigmaker in San Francisco from at least as early as 1882 until at least 1901. His business addresses included 111 Stockton (1882-6), 122 McAllister (1888-1898), and 2211 Filmore (1901). By 1888, he had started listing himself as a "Seller of Perfumery and Cosmetics," in addition to his Hair Goods business. An ad in the 1890 San Francisco Directory read: "Monks' Medicated Extract, the best in the world for the hair."
