William Marold, of Terre Haute, Indiana, registered a Patent for his Hair Restorative/Tonic in 1882 (Patent #259,884). Marold claimed it would prevent the hair of the head from falling out, and produce a new growth of hair in the case of baldness. The composition was made by combining 2 1/2 pounds of hop root, 3 ounces of grape vine buds, and 2 ounces of rosemary with 1 gallon of water. The ingredients were boiled for two hours and then filtered prior to use.
