Mackay's Hair Composition
James Mackay, of New York City, Registered a Patent for his "Composition For The Hair" in 1842 (Patent #2,541). His was the first patented hair preparation I found in the U.S.. He said his preparation would be for "effectively cleansing the head, and preserving and beautifying the human hair."

The Composition was made by the following steps: (1) boil about 1/2 pound of carrots until soft, (2) add 1 gill of rum or spirits, 1/2 gill of sweet-oil, and 12 drops of oil of bergamot. The primary ingredient was the "carrot liquor."
