Albert L. Smith & Co., of Palatine, Illinois, registered a label for "Prof. Dyke's Beard Elixir" in 1878. He later registered the brand name "Hirsutine" as a trademark for "Hair Invigorators" in 1884. The label shown was given as an example of how the trademark was used. It says that the product is "The only Infallible Hair & Beard Grower," and that it was made only by the H. & U. B. Co. The picture shows six pictures of a man with various stages of beard growth. Smith indicated that he had just started using the brand name earlier in 1884.
