Nellie S. Hawley, of Omaha, Nebraska, registered a Patent for a Hair Dressing in 1889 (Patent #416,606). She said the dressing was intended to by applied prior to crimping or curling, to cause the curls to last longer. The preparation was made by the following steps: (1) combine 8 ounces of pure alcohol, 5 ounces of balsam copaiba; (2) put 8 ounces of gum arabic into 1 quart of pure water, stirring it over heat until completely dissolved; (3) after the gum arabic solution cools, mix it with 24 ounce of alcohol; (4) combine the two mixtures, and add 2 quarts of pure water; (5) filter the mixture, and add 2 ounces of extract of white rose.
