John Hart was born in Penn. in about 1835. The son of immigrants from Baden Germany, by 1860 he was listed as a Barber in Lancaster, PA. The 1870 census showed him as the "Manuf. of Hair Restorer." At some point he also sold a bitters. Hart patented the heart shaped bottle in 1868 (View Full PDF).
