Beverley Harris, of New Orleans, Louisiana, Registered a Patent for her "Improvement in Hair Tonics" in 1859 (Patent #23,086). The primary ingredients in the formula were the bitter-apple and gunpowder. The concoction was made by (1) mixing 1/2 gallon of cold-pressed castor-oil with eight grains of quinine, (2) combine this with four ounces of gunpowder, making a paste, (3) combine two ounces of bitter apple with a quart of alcohol for about ten minutes, then strain it through a woolen cloth, (4) mix all the ingredients together (including 1 quart of bay rum), and let stand for six hours.
