Mary Goldman registered a Patent for a Hair Wash in 1880 (Patent #225,979). Her address on the Letters of Patent indicated that she was from Toledo. The preparation was made by forming a lye of wood ashes, filtering it, adding an infusion of hops, sulfate of quinine, Jamaica Rum, and if desired, Bay Rum.
Moses Goldman, probably Mary's Husband, ran an ad in an 1880 Toledo Directory which said his business was also the headquarters for "Madame Goldman's Excelsior Hair Wash."
