Forrest's Hair Restorative
R. Wilson Carr, of Baltimore registered a Patent for this preparation in 1865 (Patent #50,901). Carr claimed it was a "new medical compound to produce hair on bald heads where the hair-follicles are not dead, to prevent hair from falling out, and to cause it to grow more thickly and with greater luxuriance where it is thin and scanty." The primary ingredients were onion juice, alcohol, and flavoring oils. The concoction was made by mixing a half gallon of onion juice with a half gallon of an alcohol/onion tincture. The tincture was made by macerating the remaining onion pulp into the alcohol. Oils of rosemary (2 ounces), bergamot (1 ounce), and lemon (1 ounce) were then added to the mixture. Dr. R. Wilson Carr was listed as a Coroner in Baltimore from 1869 to 71. During the same period he was also listed as a member of the firm Carr Bros & Co. They were Wholesale Druggists, located at 69 N. Charles. John B. Carr was listed as the other brother during those years. By 1882, the firm was composed of Joseph W. and John B. Carr, and they were located at 32 German. The business took in other partners and added addresses over the years. They were still listed as Carr, Owens & Co., at least as late as 1906. Considering the span of generations, the numerous addresses, and the various partners they had in their business, I think it's likely that they sold more than one hair preparation. This is just the only one that I know of.
