Andrew Fletcher's Hair Medicine
Andrew J. Fletcher, of Red Bluff Calif., registered a Patent for his "Hair Medicine" in 1870 (Patent #101,722). His formula consisted of: 8 ounces of spirits of rosemary, 4 ounces of distilled water, 2 ounces of aqua-ammonia, 2 ounces of sweet almond oil, and 1 ounce of extract of manzanita. The manzanita was probably his primary claim, because it is a rare evergreen shrub which is very climate-sensitive. He allowed the substitution of extract of quassia chips for the manzanita.
