Fish's Infallible Hair Restorative
The Wilsons provided the following information about Fish's Hair Restorative in their book.
Benjamin Fish backed a local Chemist, Niles Mills, in putting up the Hair Restorative in 1859. Since it was Fish's money, it carried Fish's name. Norman S. Coon registered the brand name as a Trademark in 1861. Coon had become a partner-agent in their company. Mills was manufacturing it, and Redington & Co. were marketing it at that time. Mills withdrew from the partnership and claimed sole ownership of the brand in 1863. He changed the shape of the bottle and had it marketed by Crane & Brigham. Fish & Coon also claimed ownership of the brand, but they went out of business around 1863.
Niles Mills was born in New York around 1822. By 1860 he had moved to San Francisco and had become a Dealer in Perfumery. He registered the Trademark originally in 1861. By 1863, he had sold the rights to a Charles R. Story, who also registered the brand name in June of that year. Earlier that same year Benjamin Fish and Norman S. Coon also registered the brand name and claimed sole ownership. The Trademark registration that I have seen (courtesy of John Morrison) shows that Fish registered it in 1863 using a label that said right on it that Mills had registered it in 1861.

Clearly this was one of those product that was not only imitated, but also stolen by one party or the other. Since Fish's name was on it, I would have to assume he played an important part. Benjamin F. Fish was born in New York sometime between 1824 and 1830. By 1856, he had moved to San Francisco with his brother Thomas and were running a Livery Stable. The business was called: "T.A. Fish & Co, Blackhawk Stable," in 1862 and they were at 317 Pine. B.F. Fish was listed with a residence only in 1863.
