Samuel T. Fraser, William E. Gilliland, and David J. Wilson, all of Baird, Texas, registered a Patent for a Hair Tonic in 1891 (Patent #454,401). It was a preparation for the removal and prevention of dandruff, and they also claimed that it would keep the hair from falling out. The composition was made by the following steps: (1) dissolve 1/4 grain of purple aniline in 8 ounces of boiling water; (2) allow it to cool and strain it; (3) mix in 40 grains of chloral hydrate, 1 dram of sulfate of magnesia, 1 dram of tincture of cantharides (Spanish fly), and 1 dram of cologne water.
