John M. Fallis and Charles Thacker Sr., of Newport, Kentucky, registered a Patent for their "Compound for Dressing and Coloring the Hair" in 1871 (Patent #111,443). The formula consisted of 1 ounce of caster oil, 6 drachms of alcohol, 1 drachm of silver nitrate, 1 drachm of spirit of ammonia, and 1 drachm of oil of bergamot.
