Engineer's (The) Hair Remedy
Lewis Forbes, of San Francisco California, registered s trademark for a "Hair Producing and Restoring Remedy" in 1881. He indicated that he had just starting using the brand name that year. The label shown was included with the trademark petition.

Forbes registered a Patent for the Compound in 1882 (Patent #253,594). The primary ingredients were: leather, alcohol, and salt. He made a special point about the way he prepared the leather. The hides were shaved, "leaving remaining a clean skin or hide, devoid of hair or fat, but having within it the roots or germs of that which grew upon the outside and covered the animal, whether hair, fur, or wool."

I looked up Forbes in the San Francisco Directories, and found that from 1882 until 1886, he actually was an Engineer. He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad.

This one is great! What could be better to put in a hair restorer than the leather of hairy animals. That way the hair seeds could be planted right on your head. Whew!
