Damann's Hair Restorative
Rudolph Damann, of Augusta, Missouri, registered a Patent for his Hair Restorative in 1885 (Patent #321,487). The preparation was made by the following steps: (1) boil 3 pounds of slaked lime with 1 1/2 pounds of plumbago until it has the consistency of a liquid paste; (2) Add 3/4 pound of beeswax, 1 1/2 pounds of borax, 3/4 pound of tallow, 1 1/2 pound of lac sulphur, 1/2 pound of salt, and 1/2 gallon of kerosene; (3) if desired, during the stirring process, add 12-18 ounces of aqua ammonia, and/or some perfume; (4) Pulverize the composition and prepare it for bottling. Damann claimed that his preparation would produce a new growth of hair on bald spots.
