James W. Cram was a Boston Hairdresser at 379 1/2 Washington Street in 1850. He had a gymnasium in 50-51, and was not listed again until 55. From 55 to 57 he was employed by Quincy House, 14 London. It's very possible that the Hair Tonic was marketed by Quincy House. J. B. Cram & Co. were listed as Curled Hair Manufacturers at 63 Blackstone in the 1872 Boston Directory. Most likely J.B. Cram was the son of James W.
The one shown here is from my own collection. In addition to the bottle described below, there was also a large, 9" variant listed for sale. Unfortunately I don't have a description.
In 2006 a Cram's Hair Preservative was listed for sale by Gene Novak. The label on it said: "Cram's Vegetable Compound HAIR PRESERVATIVE. For restoring, cleansing, beautifying, and softening THE HAIR. . . . . Invented by Dr. Eartel, the celebrated German Chemist. . . . . Prepared and sold, wholesale and retail, by J.W. Cram, Under The Quincy House, Boston. Price 50 Cents Per Bottle."
