Jane A. Shattuck, of Utica, New York, registered a Patent for her Hair Tonic in 1883 (Patent #277,165). She claimed that it would prevent the hair from falling out or turning gray, and that it would promote the growth of hair and beautify it in general. The preparation was composed of approximately 37% petroleum, 30% bay rum, 24% glycerine, 4% borax, and 2% oil of bergamot. She registered the brand name Callitriche, as shown, for her product in 1883, claiming to have been selling the product since 1881. Interestingly, there was no mention in her recipe of the plant which has the same name. Maybe that was the SECRET ingredient.
