A. L. Baker, of Newark, New Jersey patented the formula for this "Hair Renewer" in 1869 (Patent #87,618). In the Letters of Patent, Baker mentioned that he called the preparation "Calla Cream." It was composed of 1/2 pint of bay rum, a 1/2 pint of alcohol, 2 ounces of caster oil, 1/2 ounce of spirit of camphor, 1/4 ounce of tincture of cantharides (Spanish fly), 1/4 ounce of lilium candidum, and fifteen drops of oil of neroli.
