Lemuel S. Bliss was the son of Austin and Dolly Bliss of Hatfield, Massachusetts. He had a Grocery/Drug Store in an addition to his home. He married Martha E. Claghorn. The only references to L.S. Bliss that I could find were in a book on the history of Hatfield, Mass. The information was written down from the recollections of Daniel White Wells, and no exact dates were mentioned.
The label on one of the bottles said that the preparation was analyzed by New York Chemist A.J. Atkinson in 1855, and it was determined to contain nothing harmful. Comparing this bottle description with that of Lombard & Cundall's Excelsior Hair Tonic would lead one to believe that one of the two was imitating and competing with the other. Since I don't know exact dates, I don't know which one came first.
